Match Report

I knew as soon as I took the captaincy for this match it was not going to be easy with so many regulars missing. I won the toss and took to the field which turned out to be a bad decision not realising just how strong Thurgatons batting line up was. Ali and Dan started us off but both struggled to find their line and length and trouble the openers with 40 odd without loss on the board after just 6 overs a change was needed. I brought myself on and started off well keeping runs down like wise at the other end with the addition of Phil Z to the attack. Soon we were on the receiving end as Collin Cliff and James Mitchell found their eye. It took Venomous Davey who is already having a great season with the ball to find the breakthrough and take the wicket of Collin on 48 (after being dropped first ball of the game). 4 more wickets fell in quick succession with Neil picking up 2 more and Phil chipping in with 2 of his own. At this point with Thurgaton on 130 for 5 we were feeling confident to keep them below 200 this soon changed after I dropped Will Higson on 0 to then watch him move on to 60 before being run out last ball. This was matched at the other end with Ed Mourdaunt hitting 99 before being caught. With Thurgaton ending on 301 for 7 the only people to blame were ourselves a very average bowling performance by our usual standards with the addition of poor discipline in more ways than one in the field the score reflected our performance. Even with such a big score to chase I was still confident that we could achieve this total. Opening was Paul Todd and Jake Fish and was confident they could put us in good stead, this was short lived with both falling with just 13 on the board. Max looked in good nick again and Newby also looking in good form nerves relaxed slightly. Unfortunately this was also short lived as both fell cheaply this was followed by 2 ducks from PJ and Jimmy Brown. Dan yet again stood alone with the bat scoring a very comfortable 40 and should of got a lot more but turned blind for a second and got ran out. I followed not long after on 20 leaving the man of the match and should be joint man of the match Phil Z at the crease. Both were given the instruction to stay in and grind it out till the end. Both batted with great maturity and cool headedness and steered us to the end leaving us on 144 for 8 at the close of play gaining us 2 valuable batting points but also denying Thurgaton their final bowling point. It was also good to see Phil looking confident at the crease hopefully there's more to come this year. Overall we were beaten by a good Thurgaton side that deserved the victory and have to blame ourselves for letting the game getting away from us. We definitely missed key players but should still of done better. Lets hope we can turn things round for next weeks clash at Southwell.
