Well a nice baking hot day greeted my first full game as skipper and I promptly kept up the fisko trandition by losing the toss and having to field first!
Jack and Wilko opened up the bowling and kept it all all very tight. Jack came off after a tidy 5 overs to allow James Pritchett his first chance to bowl in the senoir side. His first spell was superb and should have led to his first wicket but for a horrendous drop from Glenn (the first of his many nominations for captain calamity). Wilko finished off his tidy spell with figures of 8-0-33-0. Glenn then came onto bowl and made amends for his fielding by tacking a wicket in his first over followed quickly by two more including taking a much harder return catch than the dolly he's already dropped!. Rich Barker came on at the other end and bowled a terrific spell picking up a wicket and finishing with figures of 8-0-18-1.
Jack came back on to try and break the 5 wicket partnership that was beginning to take shape but despite coming close couldn't quite get the breakthrough his bowling deserved (8-0-28-0). Glenn (8-0-50-3) and James (8-0-56-0) finished off there spells in tough conditions with their batsman well set and looking to push on. james particulary bowled far better than his figures show and was let down by some bad fielding in the deep (Glenn again!).
Shipley finished on 200 for 4 probably 30-40 runs more than they should have got but a good effort in the field (with one obvious exception!) on a very hot day.
Still we went out to bat confident we could get somewhere close to their target. That particular optimism didn't last long as a flurry of early wickets, Glenn (0), Rob (2), Andy (0), Rich B (8) then Rich H (3) left us 15 for 5! Andy was unlucky to be caught by a stunning catch and Rich H got given out caught behind by Glenn to one that hit his thigh (captain calamity definately confirmed).
With a early finish looking likely me and Jack set about trying to salvage a respectable score and slowly started to accumulate runs. Jack played with great technique and temperment rarely looking in any trouble against any of their bowlers with me playing a rather less techinical innings based on the idea of defending anything on the stumps and throwing the kitchen sink at anything else!
We were able to put on 101 partnership before Jack finally fell for very well made 25, I reached by maiden half century before being caught out on 66. Sam (15 not out) and Tuppa (5 not out) provided some late entertainment taking us to 143 for 7 off the 40 overs - i great effort after being 15 for 5.
Well done to all the took part in what was an enjoyable game against a very friendly set of opponents.
