Match Report

Well not quite the start to the season we were after.

After an anxious week looking at weather forecasts to see if we’d get a game we turned up at the Notts & Arnold ground to a rather overcast and very windy day, almost perfect conditions for bowling – or would have been if I hadn’t lost the toss and been put into bat!

However with a number of first teamers in the squad I felt comfortable in setting a good total even if we were starting with 10 men due to Rob being late (first nomination for captain calamity!), however that particular optimism soon disappeared as first Hedgy (6) and Jimmy (duck) fell quickly.

Ed and Paul started to settle the ship and slowly started to get the runs moving only for Ed (18) to miss a straight one. Brian came in an lasted a whole 1 ball, bowled for a golden duck. Spits came to the crease and added a bit more urgency to the proceedings but unfortunately Paul wasn’t quite on the same wavelength and a mix up led to Paul being run out for 17 attempting a quick single. Spits(2) soon followed after picking out a fielder.

Drinks came with us 50 odd for 6 after 20 overs, so me and Josh set about trying to salvage a score. We put on 20 odd before Josh (5) edged onto his own stumps which prompted a further collapse as first Jonno (3), Phil (1) and Rob (1) fell quickly. Jonno took the instruction to back up a little too literally and raced halfway down the pitch to a delivery I hit back to the bowler leaving an easy run out, Phil clipped a shot off his legs to the one fielder in close on that side and Rob missed a straight one that bounced 3 times!

All this left us 93 all out with me stuck on 31 not out.

However we still believed we could win this, it was clearly a tough pitch to score on  and the opposition didn’t have a lot of depth to their batting.

A great effort in the field kept us in the game and the opposition only knocked off the runs with 7 overs to go. A superb display of bowling from Spits (8-3-16-0) kept the runs down and he deserved some wickets for his efforts (Paul repaid Spits for running him out by dropping the one outside edge he found). Jim (6-1-7-1) found his rhythm at the other end after a couple of overs getting used to running into the wind and picked up a wicket, Phil (6-1-9-1) took over from Spits and regularly went past the outside edge before finally getting his reward for a superb spell. Josh (8-2-29-1)took over from Jimmy and after a waywood first over where he seem to be aiming at a different pitch bowled a good spell and picked up a wicket. However there one good batsman saw them through with some big shots late on and we just couldn’t get that key wicket we needed as Ed(2-0-9-0), Hedgey(2-0-12-0) and Jonno (1-0-14-0) came into the fray.

Still a very good effort in the field to restrict the oppositions scoring bodes well for the rest of the season – just the batting we need to sort out!
