Going into the game knowing 5 points would guarantee mathematical safety from even a third from bottom relegation was a bonus, especially as we'd been well beaten by Long Eaton just three weeks ago.
Once again we fielded a youthful side with Ed Clayton and Lewis Macrae being two of the youngest and brightest talents in the club, Nathan Jones up from the 2's with 125* and a 63* from last weekend and Mani comes back too.
Dan Collington tells Newbs 'it's always tails', who loses the toss. We bat first.
Steady start from Newbs and Laughts, until Laughts gets a little snick behind, bring newly promoted Nathan Jones to the crease. A solid defence against the openers from Nathan and some nice fours from Newbs set the innings up nicely. Newbs then caught at gully and Mani bowled soon after, gives Dan Collington an early entrance. Nathan sets about the spin bowling change with three fours and two massive sixes, Dan hits his first five scoring shots to the boundary. 100 for 3 off 24 at drinks.
Drinks bring wickets I'm afraid when Nathan and Dan both fall 2 overs apart. The experience of Ahmed and youth of Ed Clayton play some lovely and controlled shots and build a classy partnership of 70, excellent batting lads, Ed is caught at point for 31, a good contribution from the junior breakthrough. More good running and shot play from Ahmed (47*) and Copey see us home to 204 for 7 off 48. Four nice batting points!!!
Copey gets us off to a flyer with two maidens, a wicket median, then bowls number 3 in his fifth, top bowling lad. Long Eaton 21 for 2 off 10, backed up well by Collington.
Changing to spin from both ends, Ahmed and Aaman do their thing and restrict the batsman well. Long Eatons skipper play well to reach 70 for 2 off 24 at drinks.
It's now or never, Long Eatons skipper has been at the crease a while and decides to go for the win, after some nice shots, he takes on Ahmed hitting him high and straight towards the boundary, out of nowhere Joe Cope makes up 20 yards drives to his right and grabs the ball with a worldie catch!
This loss effectively ended Long Eaton’s chances of chasing the score down, Aaman and Ahmed grind the other batsman down and Mani cleans up two more in the 45th over.
Long Eaton 156 for 8 off 48.
17 points and clear safety in Div B with a game to spare.
Well done lads.
